Two for the Show

Photo Credit: Tormenta FC So it's been a little while since I've gotten to write here. The W-League season is a sprint and when Tormenta had like five home games in 16 days, well, I was just trying to keep my head above water in addition to my day job. Add in a couple of League One games and it was a lot. All of those stories from the W-League home games can be found at StatesboroHerald.com , but if I could sum them up, Tormenta created a lot of chances, didn't capitalize enough of them and other than the home game with the Carolina Ascent, they didn't do enough and didn't come out on top. Currently the W-League team sits at 4-4-1 (13 points)on the year. The four losses are the most the team has had in a season in its four year existence and nearly matches the total they had over the three years combined. That's not a knock on this year's squad, which has some talented players and play an entertaining style of soccer, but more of a commentary on just how goo...

Tormenta seeks "Signature Win" against NC Courage

Image
Photo Credit: Tormenta FC This has not been the season the Tormenta USL-W League team had hoped for. Coming in to tonight's matchup with the undefeated and defending champion North Carolina Courage, Tormenta is 4-3-1 on the year. The three losses are already tied for the most losses the team has had in a single season (2023, when they went 6-3-3). At this point they would need a LOT of help to make the playoffs so while it's not mathematically impossible, it's highly improbable.  But that doesn't mean there's still not a lot to play for. Every one of these young women playing for Tormenta are here because they want to play professionally and this is a chance for them to showcase their skills and develop as a player. Look, I love Statesboro, but I can think of a lot better places as a college student to spend my summers than the gnat capital of the world. Tormenta lost to the Courage 3-1 earlier in the season, but Manager Kian Brownlee said he thought South Georgia o...

Everybody's Working for the Weekend

Image
My home away from home this weekend "What are we doing this weekend?" It's something that I usually ask my wife every Friday morning as a way to figure out if I forgot any plans that she's told me about during the week. Stuff like a birthday party I'm supposed to take my youngest to or dinner with my parents or her birthday. You know the drill. Well, today I didn't have to ask that. For one, she's going out of town with our youngest to our nephew's birthday party. No, I'm not a bad uncle for skipping. Someone has to stay here to take my oldest to take the SAT on Saturday morning. But that's not why I didn't ask. No, this weekend I'm basically moving in to Tormenta Stadium.  You know how baseball teams will play a three game series over the weekend? It's kind of like that, but with soccer, and it's not a series, and three different opponents over three nights split between the W-League and League One guys. Ok, so it's nothing...

Let's play two, or three, or even five

Emma Tucker takes a corner kick against Carolina Ascent.  I think this was her Olimpico.  Five games in 11 day is a lot. Throw in that two of them are against a currently undefeated South Carolina United and the final game in that stretch is a rematch with defending champion North Carolina Courage and you've got a hectic little stretch that the Tormenta W-League squad is facing.  It started this past Saturday with Tormenta's 3-1 win over Carolina Ascent . Tormenta takes on the aforementioned SC United tonight on the road before hosting the Charlotte Eagles on Friday. Tormenta and Charlotte tied 1-1 back on May 20th. On Sunday, Tormenta hosts SC United in their return trip and then Wednesday is that rematch with the NC Courage, who are also undefeated at this point. In total, that's five games against the top teams in the South Atlantic League in 11 days. Combined, the opponents in Tormenta's next four games are 8-1-3. But to be the best, you've got to beat the best ...

Dear Chattanooga Fans

Dear Chattanooga Fans, I have committed the grievous oversight of neglecting Rusty the Red Wolf in my recent Mascot Pants Wearing post . After consulting with my PR team, we at Stormwatch912 are issuing the following statement from our Director of Fixing Screwups division, Tommy Flanagan: Rusty is a valuable member of the USL League One Mascot family. He's important  and beloved by the Red Wolves team. And Chattanoonga as a whole. And Tennessee. And the United States. And the world. He's the most beloved mascot in the world. Yeah, that's it.  We didn't overlook him though. No, we, we just missed him. He was hiding. Yeah, that's the ticket. Hiding. He was camouflaged. Yeah, that's it. Camo. We even went searching for all the mascots before posting. Me and my wife, Morgan Fairchild. Yeah, that's it. Me and Morgan Fairchild were in charge of finding all the mascots and Rusty was so well hidden that we missed him. That's the ticket. And when we reported bac...

The Six Yard Box - Oscar Interview (and a Tampa Bay Preview)

Welcome back to another edition of the Six Yard Box where we interview players or coaches with Tormenta but try not to take ourselves too seriously. Today we've got defender Oscar who joined us after practice on Tuesday for a brief chat. As always, I appreciate their time as answering questions from the guy who occasionally hangs around practice with his kid isn't necessarily high on any player's list of things to do, but he was great.  After that, we've got a guest post looking at Tampa Bay for Tormenta's upcoming game with the Rowdies in the Jagermeister Cup.  This interview was lightly edited, mostly to remove all my "ums" and "yeahs"  [Stormwatch912] First off, just question for jersey number. What tell me about 58 why why we're going with that?  [Oscar] So, I used to be 19, basically. But I went 58 because, as a kid, one of my first favorite players was in the Mexican league, and his name was Juan Pablo Rodriguez. He was a midfielder pla...

Where're your pants, son?

Image
I've got problems with Hoot, but don't worry, I've got problems with a lot of the other League One Mascots as well. Edit: So I'm a goof and I somehow totally missed Rusty the Wolf, Chattanooga's pants-wearing mascot, when I initially posted this. This was not intentional and certainly did not happen because Chattanooga beat Tormenta last weekend and I was subconsciously still upset about it. Nope, I'm just someone who managed to overlook them and there's no one to blame but myself. I have issued my formal apology to Chattanooga fans through our Department of Fixing Screwups spokespeople and added a section about Rusty below. I'm sorry, again, Chattanooga fans. Clearly I like you all as I keep rating Scott Mackenzie high on the Manager Handsomeness rankings.  Also since first posting this, I've also learned the Texoma birds are named Tex (the red bird) and Oma (the gray bird). So we've got that going for us, which is nice.  Looking around League ...
