Tormenta faces Charlotte needing a win to keep control of playoff fate

Photo Credit: Tormenta FC Tormenta and Charlotte will match up for the fourth time on Saturday. The two tied 1-1 on July 20th in a Jagermeister Cup game (Charlotte won 3-2 on penalties) They tied 1-1 on June 1 in a regular season match. The pair tied, you guessed it, 1-1 on April 27 in another Cup match (with Charlotte winning 5-4 on penalties) If we go back to last year, in the 2023 regular season finale, Charlotte and Tormenta tied, 1-1. You have to go back to August 12, 2023, five meetings ago, to find a match that didn't end 1-1 (that one was a 3-2 Independence win.) You have to go all the way back to the first round of the 2022 playoffs to find the last time Tormenta actually defeated Charlotte. (Though if you're going to win just one, a playoff one is a good one to win.) What I'm saying is Tormenta is due for another win against Charlotte. It would be a much needed win for South Georgia as Charlotte would need an epic collapse over their final six games to miss the pl

Parker's heroics save Tormenta

I don't know how anyone plays goalkeeper. Scratch that. I don't know why  anyone plays goalkeeper. Presumably you've all watched soccer before. You've seen how fast and strong these guys are. And you've seen how hard the fire shots off, even under pressure. We're talking, what, somewhere between 40 to 60 miles per hour on shots, if the internet is to be believed.  And yet, there are people who willingly fling their bodies around with reckless abandon and willingly put their bodies in front of shots from all angles. What would possess someone to do that? On Saturday night in Spokane, Tormenta was glad that, whatever the motivation, Ford Parker made that choice as he (along with the help of his defense) made some tremendous early saves to keep the Velocity* off the board as Spokane and South Georgia played to a 0-0 draw in the conclusion of the two teams' meetings this year. Early on, Tormenta was under tremendous pressure from Spokane, almost from the opening

On the Road Again

Photo Credit: Tormenta FC It's been a while since Tormenta has had a regular season League One game.  The last time the team played in the regular season, team co-owner and president Darin Van Tassell was a year younger. The last time Tormenta played a regular season game a stamp only cost 73 cents. The last time South Georgia took the field in a regular season game, Joe Biden was still president. The last time.... you know what, this bit isn't all that funny. It will only be 26 days thanks to two bye weeks sandwiched around the final group stage of the Jagermeister Cup. I'll do better. When Tormenta last left the field in a regular season game, they'd tied Northern Colorado 1-1 to remain in the final playoff spot. That's the only League One game the Hailstorm haven't won dating back to July 27. Despite the time off, Tormenta has managed to hold on to the eighth and final playoff spot as none of the teams chasing them took advantage of games in hand to overtake

We're Talking About Playoffs

Photo Credit: Tormenta FC Another off week for Tormenta last week meant we went quiet on here. (The real reason is work got busy, my oldest had cross country and soccer, we went to my in-laws and the Statesboro Herald was willing to pay me to do a high school football preview and then cover a game. I enjoy you all and I appreciate you reading, but I also appreciate that someone is willing to pay me to write and will gladly take that opportunity.) But the bye week is over and so now I just have to squeeze in a couple of posts here this week in addition to everything else going on. During the summer when work was slower and my kid didn't have anything going on, it was easy to get into a rhythm of three posts a week. I didn't think about how busy Fall would be when I settled on a Monday/Wednesday/Friday posting schedule. Nevertheless, we march onward to new and exciting blog posts. While Tormenta was off this week, they managed to hold on to the 8th spot in the playoff field as th
