Kickers and Tormenta prepare for Jägermeister Cup matchup
Nick Akoto and Tormenta return to Jagermeister Cup play Saturday. |
Fresh off their 4-0 win over Chattanooga in which they dominated in pretty much every aspect of the game, South Georgia Tormenta will look to carry that momentum forward as they enter the third match of group play in the Jägermeister Cup Saturday as they face the Richmond Kickers at Tormenta Stadium.
Richmond and Tormenta first met in Week 3 with Tormenta coming away with a 3-1 regular season road victory over the Kickers. Conor Doyle, Niall Watson and Mason Tunbridge all scored the Ibises with Richmond's score coming off an own goal. The Kickers were able to create chances in that game, outshooting Tormenta 16-10 (7-5 on target), but Ford Parker came up big with critical saves and Doyle's goal four minutes in gave Tormenta some breathing room.
Since then, Richmond has gone 1-2-2 in League one and Jägermeister Cup play with their lone win coming over Central Valley back on April 6th. Needless to say, Richmond is a team in need of a win and as their fans are well aware, their win over Central Valley was their first since July 1 of last season. (They did prevail in a penalty kick shootout in Jägermeister Cup play. You'd have to ask a Richmond fan if they counted that as a win in their hearts or not.)
In Jägermeister Cup play, the Kickers are actually in third place in the East Group, one point ahead of Tormenta by virtue of their PK win over Greenville in the first round of Cup play. Greenville leads the group with 4 points and are the only team in the group to have won a game in regulation so far. Charlotte and Richmond both have two points while South Georgia sits at the bottom of the standings with one point.
Tormenta will be welcoming back several familiar faces to Tormenta Stadium, including longtime goalkeeper Pablo Jara, Ryan Sierakowski, Arthur Bosua, Nil Vinyals and Adrian Billhardt. Before Tormenta's first game with Richmond, Manager Ian Cameron summarized what it's like to go against former members of Tormenta when he said, "Saturday's about stopping them and having them have the worst performance they've ever had in their careers."
Richmond has struggled offensively this season averaging only one goal a game across their nine regular season and Cup games. The Kickers have scored only one goal in their two Jägermeister Cup matches and only eight goals in their seven regular season games. Tormenta, meanwhile, have scored 17 goals across 10 games across regular season and Cup competition.
Other group action will see both Greenville and Charlotte playing one of their two out-of-group stage games. Greenville will face Spokane on the road and Charlotte will also be traveling as they take on Northern Colorado. Both of those games will kick off at 9 p.m. Eastern.
South Georgia and Richmond will kickoff at 7:30 at Tormenta Stadium and can be streamed on ESPN+.
