Tormenta W-League off to a strong start
So I went to work at my day job on Monday and like any other day, I did my normal day job tasks as best as I could. I noticed it was a little cool in the office and wondered if I might be coming down with something, but my coworkers said the same thing about it being cold to them too. I'd been tired all day, but I figured that was just me not wanting to be at work on a Monday. Anyway, I head home and tell my wife that I felt tired. She told me I looked tired (thanks, honey) and should go ahead and get to bed. This was around 6 p.m. Honestly, it sounded like a great idea, so I took some NyQuil and went to bed and was asleep around 6:15 p.m.
I stayed in bed until 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday except to make some Gatorade and to take a shower at some point Tuesday morning. I slept for the overwhelming majority of those 22 hours with my only symptoms being a sore throat, no appetite, and a desire to sleep for 22 hours. I can't say I was better when I finally got up, but I wasn't worse. I took a Covid test (negative) and was basically back in bed by 8:00 Tuesday night, but as you can imagine after sleeping that much, Tuesday night was a fitful night's sleep. I managed to make it to my youngest' Pre-K graduation Wednesday morning and by 2 p.m., I had actually started to feel back to normal. I had a normal night's sleep last night and I'm back to my usual routine this morning.
All that is the long way of saying I promised you a Tormenta USLW recap from their first two games and then I bailed on you because my body had other ideas. We have a full money-back guarantee here at Stormwatch912 so those of you seeking refunds can reach me at my @altavista.com account and I'll get right on that.
So here's the upshot if that's more than you were hoping to read and just wanted to know how the team is doing. They're undefeated through two road games, with an win and a draw. As you know by now, I don't put a lot of stock in power rankings (we have records of wins and losses to tell us who is good and not), but Tormenta checked in at Number 8 on this weeks USLW Power Rankings and that's pretty good.
Tormenta started their season a week ago on a rainy Wednesday night in North Carolina against the Fayetteville Fury. Actually, if it was just rainy, that would have been great. Unfortunately, it was raining and storming. Kickoff was delayed more than three hours before the lightning moved through and it was safe enough for the game to get underway.
It took just 20 minutes for Tormenta to get on the board with Momo Nakao getting the first goal of the season for Tormenta in the 20th minute. I know they're different sports, but if I was Nakao, I'd want to have the ball rolled out of play and over to the Tormenta bench as a keepsake of scoring the first goal of the season. Kind of like a baseball player getting their first professional hit. Presumably that didn't happen and they just took the ball back to midfield and resumed play, but I'm just throwing it out there to anyone at Tormenta or the USLW or USL League One in general. Let someone who scores their first goal keep the ball. Or at least set it aside and give them or their family the option to pay for it if the club or league won't do it. But we've gotten really off track.
Roughly 20 minutes later Elis Nemtsov doubled Tormenta's lead when she got to a loose ball in the box and fired it past the Fury goalkeeper to extend South Georgia's lead to 2-0.
Carlyn Presley got her first goal of the season early in the second half in the 53rd minute to further extend Tormenta's lead.
Nakao added an assist in the 65th minute when her cross following a corner kick found the head of Melanie Mckoy as Tormenta poured it on, making it 4-0.
Alice Bussey closed out the scoring in the 75th minute by converting a penalty kick to make it 5-0 for Tormenta.
Tormenta had a quick turnaround (which is often the case in USLW as the teams have about seven weeks to play 12 games), as they faced the North Carolina Courage in Cary, North Carolina. If you tuned in late to this one, you missed a lot.
The Courage jumped out early with a goal in the second minute of play to put Tormenta in an early hole. It did not take long for them to respond, however, as just a minute later, Dara Russo was able to respond with a shot past the North Carolina goalkeeper to tie the score at one.
If you tuned in (Editor: you logged on, you didn't tune in. What are we doing here? Words matter. No one was able to fiddle with their antenna and tune in to this game. They loaded up a website to watch. Come on Luke, you're better than this.). Ok, if you logged on after hearing there were two goals in three minutes and expected fireworks for the next 87, you may have been disappointed as there were no more goals to speak of. However, You'd have had the privilege of seeing Tormenta goalkeeper Cora Brendle make several saves to keep the score tied and help Tormenta split the points.
South Georgia currently sits in third place in the South Atlantic region, trailing Wake FC (currently 6th in the USLW Week 3 Power Rankings) and North Carolina Fusion, both of which have two wins. Wake FC is currently 2-1-0 while North Carolina Fusion are 2-0-0.
Tormenta and North Carolina will close out their season series (yes, already), when the two face off in Statesboro on Sunday, May 26 at Tormenta Stadium in Tormenta's home opener.
