Goal Kicks
I don't know why I named this Goal Kicks. We're not focusing on goal kicks. In fact, they're probably not going to be mentioned again after I finish this introduction. But it seemed like a good title for a post that is basically a mishmash of different things that I haven't been able to write up a proper blog post about. I do have a story coming out Thursday in the Statesboro Herald about Tormenta's offseason rebuild. It's not super in depth (if you're reading this, you won't find anything you didn't already know), but I do like to plug my paid work since the more people who read it, the more likely it is they'll keep paying me do it.
- Let's hit some scheduling first. Tormenta's season opener against Richmond has been moved to Friday night, March 7th at 7 p.m. at Tormenta Stadium, making it the only independent professional soccer match played that night. If you want your soccer fix, you'll need to tune in, or really just log in to ESPN+, no tuning necessary. I was initially nervous when I saw the schedule change, but as luck would have it, my son's soccer team has one Friday night off between now and the end of March, and it happens to be that night. So yay for me.
- Just a few weeks later, Tormenta will host the first round of the US Open Cup when they host Harbor City FC on Thursday, March 20. Last year saw Tormenta fall in the Round of 32 to Charleston in the final minute. Another fortuitous break for me as my son doesn't have a game that night so, fingers crossed, we can make it. I missed all the 2024 Open Cup games because my oldest either had a game or was in the ER or I couldn't travel to Miami or Charleston on a weeknight.
- Tormenta came away with a 5-2 win over Atlanta United 2 over the weekend as Mason Tunbridge scored twice and Naill Reid-Stephen, Aaron Walker and Sebastian Vivas all scored in the win. Tormenta plays another preseason game Friday at 11 a.m. against UPSL side Athletico Atlanta. I'm going to do my best to sneak away from my actual job for a few hours to watch, but we'll see how that goes.
- John Morrissey over at his substack took a look at Tormenta's offseason a week ago and is certainly worth your time. I have no evidence to back this up, but it feels like he writes about Tormenta more than their fair share and just by me mentioning this, it'll be in his head and he won't write about them again until mid-August, so that's my bad.
That's all for now folks. Have a wonderful day.
