Tormenta seeks "Signature Win" against NC Courage

This has not been the season the Tormenta USL-W League team had hoped for. Coming in to tonight's matchup with the undefeated and defending champion North Carolina Courage, Tormenta is 4-3-1 on the year. The three losses are already tied for the most losses the team has had in a single season (2023, when they went 6-3-3). At this point they would need a LOT of help to make the playoffs so while it's not mathematically impossible, it's highly improbable.

But that doesn't mean there's still not a lot to play for. Every one of these young women playing for Tormenta are here because they want to play professionally and this is a chance for them to showcase their skills and develop as a player. Look, I love Statesboro, but I can think of a lot better places as a college student to spend my summers than the gnat capital of the world.

Tormenta lost to the Courage 3-1 earlier in the season, but Manager Kian Brownlee said he thought South Georgia outplayed them for much of the match and there were three mistakes his team made and the Courage capitalized on all three.

He knows they're the class of the league right now and he essentially guaranteed a win following Tormenta's 2-0 loss on Sunday night.

"We just had an amazing talk after the game. It was player-led. We're going to be absolutely ready for (the Courage game) and that's going to be our signature win on the season right there," Brownlee said.

Helen Gutierrez is ready for the challenge of facing the Courage.

"I'm excited. So excited," she said. "They're probably, kind of like how we were thinking coming into this match (against South Carolina United), we defeated this team already so we took our foot off the pedal a little but. So I think that's what their mindset's going to be. We're number one, we can take our foot off, but we're going to come at them hard, so they just better be ready."

The courage currently sits at 5-0-0 with 15 goals scored and just four allowed. Tormenta is 4-3-1 with 13 goals scored and 11 allowed.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 tonight at Tormenta Stadium.

Other stuff:

I had three stories over the weekend, two W-League stories and one on the League One guys, all in the Statesboro Herald.

John Morrissey at USLTactics broke down Tormenta's biggest problem this year, which is not being able to create good scoring chances.

Former Tormenta Legend Pedro Fonseca signed with Charlotte (and he was at Friday's USL-
W game, which I thought was cool of him to do.)

Former Torment Legend Alsadiq Hasan's journey from Iraq to Fort Wayne.

The Walkin 90 Podcast quick hits is always a good way to catch up on news around the League.

Former Northern Colorado (and 2024 USL League One Most Handsome Manager) Eamon Zayed was on The USL Show Tuesday night.

Rich Flemings and Bryan of League One On The Rocks are always a good listen, but I need them to start at 9 p.m. Eastern because I'm old and I can't always make it to the end of episodes without falling asleep.

Kaylor Hodges has been doing yeoman's work with his semi-daily USL Semi-Pro show

There's a lot more great stuff out there. We're fortunate to have so much coverage of USL available. I'll have a full recap of tonight's game online at Statesboro Herald tomorrow and my hope is to have a preview of the USL League One game Saturday.
